Toros Split on Day One of Tournament of Champions

Katie Jordan led the Toros with 3 runs scored, 2 hits and a double on the afternoon.

Turlock, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills eeked out an 8-inning 2-1 squeaker over  Central Washington to begin the Cal State Stanislaus-hosted Tournament of Champions, but committed 5 errors in game two in falling 7-6 to 13th-ranked Seattle University.

CSUDH starter Regina Farfan and CWU starter Linse Vlahovich were locked in a pitcher's duel in the opener, with Farfan not allowing a hit over the first three innings.  The Toros, on the other hand, spotted their hurler a 1-0 lead in the first after Jodi Nakawatase walked to lead off the game.  After the next two batters were retired during which Nakawatase moved to second, Jennifer Frazier singled up the middle to plate the speedy Nakawatase for a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats tied the contest in the 5th after the first two batters reached and were moved over on a sacrifice bunt.  One out later, Kasey Druffel sent a chopper over the mound that 2B Nakawatase back-handed, but Druffel beat out the single on a bang-bang play at first to bring home the tying run.

With neither team scoring after 7 innings, the Toros started the 8th by placing Jennifer Tellez on second via the International tie-breaker rule.  Having moved to third on a Farfan sacrifice, Tellez came home on a Nakawatase sacrifice fly to center.

Using the same rule in their 8th inning at-bat, CWU placed Tarn Potter on second, and moved her to third on a wild pitch from Toro reliever Kristin Tanaka.  Last week's NFCA Player of the Week, however, quickly settled down as she retired all three batters she faced for her second save of the year, including the last Wildcat on a deep fly to right in which Katie Garcia made the grab just before slamming into the right field fence.

In the nightcap, the Division-I bound Redhawks capitalized on five Toro errors in the first three innings to take a 6-1 lead, before committing two of their own in the bottom of the 3rd to give CSUDH one of its own unearned runs.

The Toros then touched the SU starter by sending 10 batters to the plate and four runs across to tie the game at 6-6, but missed out on an opportunity to blow the game open by leaving the bases loaded.

That missed opportunity would come back to haunt CSUDH one inning later as Seattle answered with a run in the 5th, which proved to be the game-winner.

Tanaka took the loss after relieving starter Kaci Carroll in the 4th, allowing three hits and one run.  Nakawatase, Katie Jordan, Liz Vazquez and Tanaka led the offense with two hits apiece, with Jordan scoring three runs in the loss.

CSUDH, now at 17-15, resumes Tournament of Champion action tomorrow with morning contests against Western Washington and Western Oregon, with first pitches scheduled for 9:00 am and 11:15 am, respectively.
