Offense Sputters in 7-1 and 5-1 Losses at Chico State

Liz Vazquez drove in both Toro runs as CSUDH dropped a pair of games at Chico State
Game 1    Game 2

Chico, CA -- One day after splitting a pair of pitcher's duels, Chico State's offense unlocked the answer to CSUDH's pitching riddle as the Wildcats took 7-1 and 5-1 wins this afternoon to take three games in the four-game series.  With the losses, the Toros fall to 16-14, 10-8 CCAA.

The Toros started strong in the opener as Liz Vazquez (pictured) singled home Jodi Nakawatase, who singled to begin the game and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

That was as good as it would get for the Toros in the opener, unfortunately, as the Wildcats answered with two in the 4th and five in the 5th to break the game open, with Chelsea Lundberg and Rebecca Johnson each enjoying two hits in game one.

Vazquez belted two hits while starter Kaci Carroll threw 4.1 innings in dropping to 3-7 on the year.

In the nightcap, Toro starter Regina Farfan and Wildcat Lauren Walker kept zeros on the board through the first four innings until CSUDH again put the first run on the board in the 5th, using another Vazquez RBI base hit to plate Nakawatse.

Not unlike the opener, however, the Wildcat offense again came to life late to the tune of a 5-run 6th inning after Kristin Tanaka made her second relief appearance of the day, using five hits including 2RBI hits by both Alison Smith and Kaitlyn Azevedo.

Nakawatase and Vazquez both tallied two hits, but it wasn't enough as Tanaka was saddled with the loss in falling to 5-2.

The Toros travel back up north next week to compete in the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
