Toros Topple 14th-Ranked Humboldt State in 4-1 and 4-3 (9) Wins

Michelle Medina delivered the game-winning hit in the 9th inning of game two as CSUDH swept a pair from 14th-ranked Humboldt State

Carson, CA -- Sophomore Michelle Medina (pictured) singled home Jessica Marlow with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the nightcap after junior hurler Regina Farfan out-dueled the 'Jacks' All-American pitcher in the opener as Cal State Dominguez Hills took 4-1 and 4-3 (9) wins over visiting and 14th-ranked Humboldt State, elevating the Toros to 13-11, 7-5 CCAA.  HSU, meanwhile, drops to 19-7, 8-2 CCAA, in suffering its first conference losses of the season.

The 'Jacks got on the scoreboard first in their first at-bat in the opener, using a bases loaded fielder's choice to put across the game's first run without benefit of a hit.  CSUDH, which tallied single hits in the first three innings off All-American Lizzy Prescott, finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th with four runs, benefiting from two HSU errors in the frame.

After Christine Bathauer started the inning by getting plunked by Prescott and pinch-runner Mayra Oliden was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, the 'Jacks looked to escape the inning unscathed after getting the second out via strikeout.   Its defense, however, had other ideas as it dropped its second pop up of the game to put runners on 1st and 3rd, allowing Katie Garcia to come up to the plate.

Garcia took advantage of the extra at-bat by slapping an RBI single to left, which was followed by Jodi Nakawatase RBI single to right.  Seeing the late throw come to home from right field, Nakawatase tested the HSU defense, and the foot proved mightier than the glove as Nakawatase dislodged the ball from the shortstop at 2B, allowing the third run of the inning to score.  After Katie Jordan then laced a single through the left side to bring Nakawatase to 3B, the Long Beach native came home on a passed ball for the inning's final run.

That was more than enough for CSUDH starter Farfan# who cruised after allowing the first inning run.  Farfan picked up her seventh win of the season by tossing 53 strikes in an efficient 80-pitch effort, scattering four hits and one run in handing the 'Jacks their first CCAA loss of the year.

In the nightcap, HSU scored first with three runs in the 3rd after sending 8 batters to the plate, the big blow coming on a Francesca West bases-loaded single that skimmed off a diving Liz Vazquez's glove to bring in two runners.

After the Toros scored a single run in their 4th inning at-bat on a HSU fielding error, CSUDH tied it in the 7th on clutch RBI singles by Vazquez and relief pitcher Kristin Tanaka, whose opposite field baseknock down the left field line brought home Vazquez with the tying run.

The Toros capitalized on their momentum two innings later as Marlow reached on a fielder's choice, moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt, and raced home on Medina's game-winner, handing Prescott her second loss in as many games.

Tanaka earned the win (3-1) with 2.0 solid innings of work, allowing just one hit in facing eight batters.  Jordan led the offense for CSUDH with four hits, while HSU's defense let Prescott down with three errors in each game, accounting for a total of five unearned runs on the day.

The two teams conclude their four-game set with a Saturday doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon on Toro Diamond.
