Toros Fall Just Short in Split Against San Francisco State

Regina Farfan threw 6.2 scoreless innings and picked up a save as the Toros split today's twinbill

Carson, CA -- Three Cal State Dominguez Hills pitchers teamed up to forge a 5-3 win against visiting San Francisco State in this afternoon's opener before the Gators staged a late-inning rally to take an eventual 3-2 nine-inning win in the nightcap, foiling the Toros' attempt at a four-game series sweep.  With the split, CSUDH moves to 11-9, 5-5 CCAA, while SFSU now is 11-11, 3-7 CCAA.

After the Gators scored the game's first run in the 3rd inning in game one, the Toros answered with three to take the lead for good, courtesy of a Katie Jordan RBI single, a Jennifer Frazier fielder's choice RBI and an SFSU error.

The visitors looked to regain momentum in their 4th inning at bat by loading the bases with one out against CSUDH starter Kaci Carroll, but reliever Kristin Tanaka proved to be just what the doctor ordered as she induced Monica Amburgey on a shallow fly to right, and Jordana Freemer on a grounder to 2B to quell the rally.

CSUDH used the edge it gained from Tanaka's appearance to plate two in their 4th inning, using two ground outs to score their two runs.  SFSU replied with two in the 6th as Freemer got the best of Tanaka their second meeting, hammering a double down the left field line to cut the lead to 5-3, and looked to add more one inning later after getting two runners on with one out.  But Regina Farfan, the third Toro pitcher of the day, retired two of the three batters she faced to pick up her first save of the season.

The Gators committed two costly errors in the game, while SFSU starter Vanessa Truan lasted 3.0 innings, allowing four earned runs for the loss.

In the nightcap, the Toros looked ready to sweep after scoring single runs in the first and second innings as game two starter Farfan kept SFSU off the scoreboard through the first five innings of play, thanks in large part to the CSUDH defense that included a Jodi Nakawatase backhanded spear and flip in one motion to force an SFSU runner at 2nd with the bases loaded and two out in the 3rd.

That all changed in the 6th, however, as Kendra Wood got the first Gator run of the late game with an RBI single to center field.  SFSU again mounted a charge in the 7th off relief pitcher Carroll, who allowed a leadoff single to Lea Cardenas.  With two out and the bases loaded, Monica Amburgey slapped a single into right field after two close pitches on the corners went the SFSU batter's way to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

With Gator starter Ashley Jackson still in the game and Tanaka making her second relief appearance of the day, the Gator hurler won the battle of attrition after Karolyn Gubine gave SFSU a 3-2 lead in the top of the 9th with an RBI single to center.  Jackson then retired three of the final four Toros she faced in the final inning, including the final two via strikeout.

Katie Garcia, Jordan and Frazier led the way for the Toros with two hits apiece, while six different CSUDH batters drove in one run.  SFSU, meanwhile, benefited from Danielle Chapman's huge 7-for-8 day, and 3 hits and 3 RBI from Freemer, who received two intentional walks on the day.

The Toros visit former CCAA school Cal State Bakersfield on March 7, before returning home to host 6th-ranked and defending CCAA Champion Humboldt State on March 14-15.
