Toro Rally Falls Just Short in Nightcap as CSUDH Splits Against Coyotes

Game 1 Game 2

Carson, CA -- It was deja vu all over again for the Toros softball team as CSUDH took a relatively easy 7-3 win in the opener against visiting Cal State San Bernardino, only to squander an early lead in game two and eventually fall 8-7.  With the split, the second in two days, CSUDH moves to 4-4, 2-2 CCAA, while CSUSB now is at 4-5-1, 2-2 CCAA.

CSUDH starter Regina Farfan helped herself in the first by hammering her first home run of the year to left center, driving in Liz Vazquez, who reached on a fielder's choice one batter earlier.  The Toros then cashed in their third run of the frame on a Coyote fielding error, giving Farfan a 3-0 lead entering the second.

In the second inning, however, the Coyotes tied the game at 3-3, using three-consecutive singles to begin the frame.  CSUDH looked to get out of the jam after Farfan induced the inning's fourth batter to line into a double play, but Joleen Batista blasted  a two-run triple over the right fielder's head, after which a Debbie Shisler tied the game with an RBI single to left field.

The offensive surge slowed down over the next few innings until the Toros plated four in the 5th to take the lead for good.  In the frame, CSUDH capitalized on four hits and two Coyote errors which allowed the final two runs to score.

Vazquez and Jennifer Frazier (pictured) tallied two hits apiece while Farfan earned her fourth win of the year (4-1).

In the nightcap, the Toros plated the first four runs of the game, the big blow coming on a Khryssi Steele 2RBI double in the 4th, looking to put the Coyotes away.  CSUSB, however, sent 13 batters to the plate in the 6th, tallied seven hits and capitalized on four Toro errors to bring in eight runs for a 8-4 lead, with six of those being unearned.

CSUDH made its comeback with three runs in the 7th inning as Katie Garcia doubled to drive home two, but CSUSB reliever Jackie Jacob induced the final Toro batter into a harmless groundout to earn the afternoon split

Starter Kaci Carroll and Bri Mahr tallied multiple-hit efforts in the loss as Carroll fell to 0-3 on the year, while CSUSB starter Tawni Baker improved to 3-3 with her 6.2 innings of work.

The Toros get away from conference action on Monday as BYU-Hawai'i visits Toro Diamond for a non-conference twinbill, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 11:00 am.
