Tritons Take Two From Toros in Softball Sweep

LA JOLLA, Calif. The UC San Diego Tritons held on for narrow 4-3 an 5-3 victories Saturday over Cal State Dominguez Hills, sweeping the doubleheader and improving to 4-2 in CCAA play. The start of Sunday's doubleheader between the two teams has been moved to 1 p.m. due to the changing weather forecast.  Sophomore Katie Jordan tallied four hits in the losses.

The Tritons, now 14-4 overall, racked up 10 hits in the first game. Seven of the nine starters got on base and senior outfielder Randelle Bundy went 3-for-3 at the plate.

After UCSD scored three runs in the first four innings, the Toros rallied back for three of their own in the top of the fifth inning. To start the bottom of the sixth inning, Bundy placed a double down the left field line. Junior Allison May put down a sacrifice bunt to move Bundy to third base. After freshman Katrin Gabriel flied out to centerfield, senior Danielle Lukk came threw with a clutch RBI single up the middle to score Bundy.

The Tritons secured the 4-3 victory and sophomore Christine Zankich, who replaced senior Melissa Ward and pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, earned the win. It was Zankich's second victory of the season.

UCSD jumped out to another early lead in game two by putting four runs on the board in the second inning, thanks in part to a couple of CSUDH errors. The Toros again fought back, rallying for three runs in the middle innings.

The Tritons continued their sixth inning magic as senior Jenny Maze added an insurance run with her 26th career home run. Maze's shot landed deep over the centerfield fence. Between the two contests, Maze worked her way on base four of the six times she came to the plate. She finished 2-for-4 with two runs, one run batted in and two walks.

The UCSD bullpen contributed another scoreless effort, this time from the duo of senior Nicole Fullerton and Zankich. Junior starter Lauren Chastain earned the victory and improved to 6-0 so far in 2008. Zankich earned her first save of the season.

With the two losses CSUDH dropped to 8-8 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Tritons and Toros will play another doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
