Kaci Carroll Leads Toros to Split Against Azusa Pacific

True freshman masterful in 3-hit shutout

Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills reversed its recent pattern of taking the opener and dropping the nightcap as the Toros rode freshman Kaci Carroll's three-hit masterpiece to a 2-0 game two win after falling in the opener, 6-1, against visiting Azusa Pacific this afternoon on Toro Diamond.  With the split, CSUDH moves to 8-6, while APU now stands at 5-3.

Carroll was magnificent in the circle as she picked up her second win in three starts (3-2).  The Long Beach native allowed just three total hits, singles in the 3rd, 4th and 6th, but didn't allow a runner to reach third base in the victory.  An aggressive APU mindset at the plate contributed to Carroll's success as the freshman lefty expended just 67 total pitches in the complete-game win, 50 of which were strikes.  Fittingly, Carroll put the clamps on the afternoon by catching the final APU out of the game, a harmless pop up, following a four-strikeout, no walk effort.

Offensively, the Toros played small ball, and benefited from a porous Cougar defense.  In their first at-bat, a Liz Vazquez single with Khryssi Steele on second moved the speedy Steele past third and on her way home, but Cougar catcher Natalie Mickelson dropped left fielder Bailey Blazek's relay throw to the plate, giving CSUDH a 1-0 lead.

That's where the score remained until the fifth when APU pitcher Erin Halma tossed a wild pitch with Katie Jordan on third, allowing the Huntington Beach native to trot home with an insurance run after doubling off the left-center field fence to lead off the inning.

Vazquez paced the Toros with two hits, while APU committed two errors in the game.

In the opener, the combination of Cougar pitcher Camille Hundley and hitter Cassie Treischel proved too tough for the Toros as Hundley stymied CSUDH's hitters on just two hits while Treischel blasted two home runs in the contest, with both shots hitting nearly the exact same grassy patch over the right field fence.

It was 2-0 APU heading into the top of the 7th, when the Cougars put the game out of reach with four runs, the big blows coming on Treischel's second bomb of the game, a 2-run shot, and a Rebekah Weisser 2RBI single.

The Toros mounted a charge in their final at-bat against APU reliever Sarah Moore, scoring once and loading the bases with one out, but Moore induced Vazquez on an infield fly, and Toro relief pitcher Kristin Tanaka on another infield pop-up to end the game.

Treischel went 3-for-4 in the game for the Cougars and Hundley fanned three in her two-hit win (3-1), while Toro starter Regina Farfan threw 6.1 innings in the loss (6-3), as CSUDH was unable to capitalize on three Cougar errors.

The Toros resume CCAA Conference action next weekend in La Jolla to face UC San Diego, before returning home the weekend of February 29 - March 1 to host San Francisco State.
