Toros Waste Chances in Split With NAIA’s 25th-Ranked Concordia

Game 1    Game 2

Carson, CA -- Tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the 7th in the nightcap, the Toros loaded the bases with one out and had a potential game-winning sacrifice fly to center field, but visiting Concordia University's fielder gunned down the would-be game-winner to send the game into extra innings where CUI would plate two to take a 9-7 win after CSUDH took game one 4-2.  With the split, CSUDH moves to 7-5 overall, while CUI leaves Carson at 9-3.

After the Eagles put the game's first run across in their first at-bat of the opener, the Toros capitalized in the bottom of the second as CUI starter Rachel Reekstin walked the first three batters she faced, the last two on eight-consecutive pitches.  After the CUI second baseman threw wide to home to allow CSUDH's first run to score one batter later, Reekstin induced the next three batters to hit harmless ground outs, keeping the game at 1-1.

Both pitchers found their rhythm as they kept the opposing offenses at bay until the 5th inning.  In the bottom of the 5th, the Toros broke through to take a 2-1 lead.  With Katie Jordan on second, Liz Vazquez on first and one out, a Jordan delayed steal to 3B caused an errant throw to 3B, which allowed Jordan to score.

CSUDH's momentum was short-lived, however, as Eagle Carly Smith came up with two out in the top of the 6th and hammered her first home run of the year deep over the left-center field fence to tie the game at 2-2.

One half inning later, however, the Toros used consecutive walks to open the 6th and, following the third CUI error, a Jordan 2RBI single pushed across the final two runs in CSUDH's 4-2 win.

Toro starter Regina Farfan threw an efficient 83 pitches to improve to 6-1 on the year, fanning three batters against just one walk, while Jordan tallied two of CSUDH's four hits in the contest.  The Eagles' Reekstin was the hard-luck loser as three CUI errors accounted for all four unearned runs in the loss.

In game two, the Toros scored the first two runs on a Vazquez sacrifice fly and Katie Garcia RBI single, only to see the Eagles answer with three in the 4th.  In the frame, a dropped foul ball with a runner on first gave Smith another chance, and Smith made the Toros pay with a single to left.  One batter later, the fruits resulting from CSUDH's guffaw were realized as Shannon Walton blasted her first home run over the right-center field fence to give CUI a 3-2 lead.

After the Eagles added a run in the 5th, the Toros stormed back with two of their own on an Ammanda Bush RBI double and Garcia RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.  CSUDH added three more in the 6th on a Jennifer Frazier 2RBI single and Jodi Nakawatase RBI double, but the Eagles answered with three in the top of the 7th after getting the first two runners on, and scoring two on a clutch Carter double.

The Toros had a golden opportunity to win it in the 7th by loading the bases with one out, but after Vazquez lofted a fly ball to center field, CUI's Lauren Hastings gunned down Garcia at the plate on a one-hopper, sending the game into extra innings.

CUI used that momentum in the 8th as Caitlyn Senkbiel drove home the eventual game-winner before tacking on an unearned insurance run for the game's final tally.

Garcia and Frazier led the Toros with two hits and two RBI apiece in the loss.

The Toros conclude their non-conference homestand tomorrow as Azusa Pacific visits Carson for a 12 noon first pitch on Toro Diamond.
