Softball Doubles Its Pleasure Against BYU-Hawaii, 7-4 and 8-0

True freshman Kaci Carroll tosses one-hit gem in nightcap to pick up first win of collegiate career

Carson, CA -- True freshman Kaci Carroll (pictured) took center stage in game two against visiting BYU-Hawai'i, and the left-hander didn't disappoint as she tossed a one-hit gem in facing four batters over the minimum to pick up her first collegiate win in CSUDH's 8-0 win, following the lead of Regina Farfan, who scattered five hits in the opener as the Toros took a 7-4 decision.  With the sweep, the Toros improve to 6-4, while the Seasiders remain looking for their first win of 2008 in falling to 0-6.

Carroll was magnificent in the shutout, settling down after allowing two walks in the first frame.  After her third walk of the game came in the second inning, the Long Beach product retired the next seven Seasiders she faced before April Jorgensen gave BYU-H its first hit of the game, a booming 5th-inning double deep into left field.  Unfazed, Carroll induced a ground out and fanned Melissa Lehano for her fifth strikeout of the game, ending the would-be threat.

That was plenty for the Toro offense as Carroll benefited from six Seasider errors in the game, pinning the hard-luck loss on BYU-H starter Bettye Doering, who allowed just two earned runs on the afternoon.  Jennifer Frazier and Liz Vazquez led the offensive charge with two hits apiece, with Frazier and Jodi Nakawatase each driving in two runs, including Frazier's 2RBI double in the first as part of a 5-run inning.

The opener was an extension of the previous four-game set in which the Toros started quickly, scoring twice in the first and four in the second for a quick 6-0 lead.  After an error and RBI ground out accounted for the game's first two runs, a Bri Mahr RBI double and Michelle Medina RBI single preceded two errors on the same play by a Seasider infielder, allowing two unearned runs to cross the plate.

CSUDH starter Farfan was cruising until BYU-H's final at-bat, when the Seasiders erupted for four runs, and capitalized on two Toro errors.  Kahealani Betham to start the rally by belting a deep blast to dead center, after which Seasider small ball and a dropped throw to the plate brought home the final three runs of the game before Farfan induced Kim Artiaga to pop up for the game's final out.

Nakawatase and Medina led the Toros with two hits apiece, while Katie Jordan and Nakawatase both scored two runs in the 7-4 win.  Lehano and Betham led the Seasiders with multiple hits and an RBI each, while BYU-H starter Katresha Veazie allowed 7 hits and 4 earned runs in the loss.

The Toros continue non-conference action this weekend as Concordia (CA) visits Carson for a 1:00 pm first pitch, followed by Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 12 noon.
