Dynamic Duo of Mixon and Blankenship Give Toros 72-58 Win Over Biola in Home Opener

Brittney Blankenship (L) and Neka Mixon scored a combined 36 points to lead the Toros to their first home win and a 3-0 record

Carson, CA -- Senior guard Brittney Blankenship and sophomore forward Neka Mixon scored a combined 36 points, half of the Toros' total tonight, to give
Cal State Dominguez Hills a win in its season home opener, improving its record to 3-0 while dropping Biola University to 4-1 after a 72-58 win.

The visiting Eagles of Biola University came out strong in the first half, putting three on the board just 57 seconds in after a Chelsea De Luca field goal. Keeping the fast breaks going they quickly ran their lead to 16-10 after another three, this time from Christine Reece. It was then that Blankenship, taking a feed from Whitney Gantt, sunk a trey to slowly bring the Toros back around.

A Barbara Houston jumper gave the Toros thier first lead of the night at 17-16 with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Eagles regained control of their lead until, with :06 on the clock, Blankenship made both of her two free throws to give the Toros a 37-36 lead heading into halftime.

Biola quickly tied it in the second, forcing coach Girard to call a quick time out. Back on the floor, Mixon ran a quick play to lay it in and regain the lead. Though giving the lead back to Biola once again, Ennisha Kyles respnded with a jumper to give the Toros the last lead they would need on the night at 42-41.

With 3:19 left, Mixon drove once again through the paint to draw an Eagle foul, still putting the bucket home for an old-fashioned 3-point try.  She subsequently made her next free throw and, with that energy, the Toros quickly drove to their final 14 point lead to end the game. Blankenship knotted the final two points to give the Toros their biggest point difference in a game this season.

Scoring 23 points on the night and grabbing 9 rebounds, Mixon was only four points shy of adding her name to the top ten record of most points in a game. Providing the assistance she needed in the offense was Blankenship with 13 points and 2 steals. Though both teams committed 21 turnovers it was CSUDH's 36 rebounds, as opposed to Biola's 25, that secured them the win.

Now 3-0 overall, the Toros will take a break until next week when they open CCAA Conference play. They will first host Cal Poly Pomona on December 5th with tip-off set at 5:30 pm.
