Toros Volleyball Nearly Pulls Upset Win over Host Chico State

Chico, CA --- Playing with the intensity of a top CCAA team, the Toros kept pace with the Wildcats of Chico State as they eventually fell in three sets, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17. They were led in the night by the trifecta of Ashley Clark, Heather Rushton and Marissa Anderson, all with 5 kills apiece.

Taking an early lead in set one, the serving of Melissa Velasco quickly brought them to a lead of 4-1. Able to hold the lead for half the set, a kill from Ashley Davison brought them to 13-12. However Wildcat Megan Cape saw them regain control and tie the game at 13-13. Never giving up the pace, the Toros forced numerous Wildcat errors to bring them to a one-point deficit of 21-20, only to see CSUC answer back by ending the set at 25-20 off a Lyndsay Macias and Cape block.

Playing at the same level in set two, the Toros were able to take a lead of 9-5 thanks to the exceptional blocking of Clark, Kayla Huckabee and Rushton. The Wildcats soon responded with a five-point streak to regain control and grab a lead they would hold nearly the entire set.

The Toros nealy pulled a set win as they powered through, with two five-point streaks of their own to tie the score at 23-23. A Rebekah Wolfgramm service ace brought them their final lead of the set at 24-23, but Chico answered back and took the set at 26-24.

Seemingly running out of steam in the third, CSUDH fell behind early 11-2. Refusing to go gentle into that good night, however, Clark helped lead her team with four kills to bring the Toros back to within 14-11. The Wildcats were barely able to keep the Toros in check as they managed to hold the lead for a final set score of 25-17.

Leading in the offense on the night was Rushton, Anderson and Clark with 5 kills each, while Clark's were all in the third and final set. Rushton also grabbed 4 blocks, as did Huckabee, to lead the defense. Velasco posted 10 digs to round out the night for the Toros.

Now 2-22 (1-15 CCAA), the Toros will host Cal State Monterey Bay on November 7th. First serve is set at 7:00 pm.
