Toros Late Charge Not Enough to Defeat Warriors as CSUDH Falls to Cal State Stanislaus, 54-50

Carson, CA - The Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus lived up to their name, leading nearly from tip-off to the buzzer and holding off a late Toro charge to hand CSUDH its second loss in as many nights in a 54-50 win despite a 19-point, nine-rebound performance by Brigayle Iglehart.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 9-8, 3-7 CCAA.

CSUS started the game with team play in mind as the Warriors built an 11-point lead at 18-7 behind seven different players putting the ball in the basket.

The Toros settled into a grove and slowly chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to just two at 21-19 on a triple by Iglehart.

After the Warriors pushed their lead back to six with 4:46 remaining, Alana Bailey hit down low and Jessica Liang hit from beyond the arc to bring the Toros to within one with just under two and a half minutes left, but a strong Warrior defense and a layup by Rebecca Arent gave CSUS a 29-26 halftime advantage.

CSUDH was held to a 25.0% shooting percentage, but was able to hit 11-of-13 from the charity stripe to offset the poor shooting.

After intermission Bailey hit another bucket in the paint off a pass from fellow post Ennisha Kyles to bring CSUDH back to within one, but the Warriors used a 12-2 run over the next eight minutes of play to extend their lead back up to double digits at 41-30.

Kyles ended the Warrior run with a three-point play followed by a steal and layup from Liang that began a Toro run, eventually capped by an Iglehart layup at the 6:50 mark to produce the game's first tie at 47-47.

Iglehart sank a free throw and Bailey again made her presence felt down low with a layup to give CSUDH a slim three-point cushion at 50-47.

A layup by Lysandra Williams followed by a free throw from Katie Busi quickly erased the Toro lead, however, and knotted the game at 50-50.

The Warriors converted a pair from the charity stripe a minute later for the last lead they would need as the Toros misfired on their final two attempts to tie the game, and CSUS hit another pair of free throws to seal the win.

In addition to Iglehart's 19 points, Kyles continued to be a force on the glass with 10 rebounds and seven points.  Bailey chipped in 10 points and five boards in the effort and now is just two points shy of 1,000 career points in her Toro career, which would make her the ninth player in Toro history to surpass the mark.

The Toros hit the road next weekend taking on Humboldt State on Friday and Sonoma State on Saturday, before returning home on Friday, February 8, to host Cal State San Bernardino at 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
