Tritons' Long-Range Touch Too Much for Toros as CSUDH Women's Basketball Falls to No. 21 UCSD, 65-52

Carson, CA - No. 21 UC San Diego was hitting from long-range all night long and capitalized on a 31 to 16 points off turnover advantage to take down the Toros 65-52.  With the loss, CSUDH falls to 8-5, 2-4 CCAA and UCSD improves to 11-4, 3-2 CCAA.

The Toros stumbled out of the gate against the reigning CCAA champions, committing eight turnovers over the first seven minutes of play to allow the Tritons to jump out to a 15-5 lead.

With 8:26 on the clock, Aujaneé Baldwin worked her way into the paint and earned a lay-up, cutting the deficit to just four at 19-15, but Meaghan Noud fired back for UCSD from beyond the arc to push the lead up to seven.

CSUDH continued to battle and cut the lead down to four once again on a jumper off the glass by Alana Bailey, but after a UCSD miss the Toros committed their 11th turnover of the half and Noud nailed a jumper, which was followed by a lay-up from Alexis Gaskin, to quickly increase the Triton lead to eight with a minute and a half left in the half.

After Bailey hit another bucket the Toros capitalized on a Triton turnover and Baldwin drove the lane for a lay-up with just a few ticks left to bring CSUDH within four at the break.

Gaskin hit a jumper in the opening seconds of the second half to put UCSD back up six, but Ennisha Kyles sunk a pair from the charity stripe and Brigayle Iglehart converted back-to-back lay-ups to knot the game at 35-35 with 18:06 on the clock.

Noud responded for the Tritons with back-to-back three-point shots, but the Toros fought back and tied the game again at 41-41 with 13:19 on the scoreboard.

UCSD was more than up to the challenge and seemed to find another gear, using a 12-1 run over the next three and a half minutes of play to push its lead back up to double digits at 53-42.

The Toros chipped away at the lead and cut it down to just five at 55-50 on a bucket by Iglehart, but that turned out to be the Toros' last gasp as the Triton lead quickly hit double figures again.

In the contest the Toros had no answer for the superb long-range shooting of Noud, who finished the contest with six treys and a game-high 24 points, while Michelle Osier added a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards.

The Toros were led by Iglehart with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Kyles chipped in her first double-figure scoring output of the season with 10 points to go along with her six rebounds.

CSUDH hits the road next weekend to take on San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay, with both games set to tip off at 5:30 pm.
