CSUDH Volleyball Struggles to Find Offensive Rhythm as Toros Drop a Pair on Day One of the Viking Classic

Bellingham, WA – The Toros entered the Viking Classic trying to get the 2007 season on track, however CSUDH was swept by a pair of tough opponents in Western Oregon (14-30, 16-30, 25-30) and No. 23 Western Washington (9-30, 11-30, 18-30) on day one of the tournament.  With the pair of losses the Toros are still searching for their first win under interim head coach Scott Davenport, falling to 0-6.

After the flight out of state it appeared the Toros weren't quite ready in game one as WOU setter Amy Herron served 12 straight points to get the Wolves off and running to en route to taking game one easily.

The CSUDH offense never got started as the Wolves held the Toros to only seven kills and a .000 attack percentage, while the WOU offense hit at a .300 clip.

After back-to-back kills by senior Sophia Lopes and freshman Marissa Anderson early in game two, the Toros were tied at 3-3 and seemed to be heading in the right direction.

WOU reset its attack, however, and jumped out to a 10-7 lead, only to have the Toros fight back and come within one at 11-10 on a kill by Travette Pettigrew off a set by senior Kayleigh Spratt.

The Wolves stood up to the Toro challenge and turned up the intensity to go on a 19-6 run to close out game two.

After the intermission the Toros used a dish from Lauryn Peña off the bench to cap off three early kills from Schauna Porter in building a quick 6-2 lead, only to see the Wolves grab the lead at 7-6 on a service ace by Jessica Baty.

With the jetlag finally appearing to wear off, CSUDH and WOU were locked in a point-for-point battle with neither team able to gain more than a point advantage until a kill by WOU's Kayla Mainer put the Wolves up 21-19.

CSUDH capitalized on a pair of WOU errors to come within one at 23-22, but the Wolves once again pulled away and take the game and the match.

Lopes led the offense with 11 kills and picked up eight digs while freshman Taylor Thompson made her Toro debut with 10 kills in the effort.  On her birthday, libero Jenise Espindola garnered game-high honors with 15 digs in the back row.

Against the No.23 Vikings, the Toros' offensive woes continued as CSUDH hit a collective -.030 in the three-game match while the WWU offense recorded a .442 hitting percentage, making only six errors overall.

Espindola continued her strong play in the back row, again earning game-high honors with 17 digs in the effort.

CSUDH looks to get things headed in the right direction tomorrow when they face Seattle University at 11:00 am, and then St. Martin's University at 3:00 pm.  The Toros will then return home for their 2007 home opener on Wednesday, September 5, when they host No. 17 Cal State L.A., with first service slated for 7:00 pm in the Torodome.
