Murphy Su'a Named Cal State Dominguez Hills Baseball Head Coach

Long-time assistant becomes just 4th baseball coach in program's history after taking over as 'interim' head coach in 2006

Cal State Dominguez Hills has named Murphy Su'a as the baseball head coach, it was announced this afternoon by CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen.  Su'a, who was appointed interim head coach on August 28, 2006, after former head coach George Wing announced his retirement, becomes just the 4th head coach in the program's history after spending the six previous years donned in Cardinal and Gold, including five as an assistant coach prior to the 2006 campaign.

"I am extremely pleased to remove the 'interim' tag and announce Murphy Su'a as the head coach of the Toros baseball program," begins CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen.  "As the 'interim' coach last season, Coach Su'a proved that he is someone who has what it takes to be successful at this level.  He not only leads by example but also understands that success on the field is only part of what we expect of our programs here at CSUDH.  He is someone of impeccable character who will help us continue our reputation of building strong foundations in the lives of our young student-athletes through competition.  I have every confidence that Murphy will lead the Toros baseball program to new levels of success on and off the field."

No stranger to the Toro dugout, Su'a brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience to the Toros.  He played two seasons at LA Valley College (1976-77) before transferring to Brigham Young University where he was an NCAA Division I 1st-team All-America selection in 1979.  Also a 1st-team All-Rocky Mountain Region and All-WAC selection, Su'a broke six Cougar single-season records for home runs, RBI, runs scored, doubles, total bases and at-bats, and was among the national leaders in home runs and RBI en route to leading BYU to the WAC Championship.

Invited to try out for the USA National Team, Su''a instead elected to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1979.  He played for the Class-A Lodi Dodgers in 1980 and was recognized as the Dodgers' minor league system "Player of the Week" in July 1980.  Su'a left the Dodgers to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers, and played in Burlington, IA, Stockton, CA and El Paso, TX.  In August of 1981, Su'a was named the Brewers' minor league "Player of the Month" and was selected to play on the Midwest League All-Star Team.

Su'a began his coaching career with the Brewers as a player/coach for Paintsville in 1983 and was a player/manager for the Brewers' affiliate in Stockton, CA.  Coach Su'a then served as the pitching coach at East Los Angeles College for two years before taking over assistant coaching duties at West Torrance HS, where he helped guided the Warriors to six Bay League Championships.

"I'm thrilled that Patrick Guillen has the confidence in me to lead the baseball program," begins Su'a of his appointment.  "I'm excited to take the responsibility and look forward to being the head coach of this program for many years to come.  CSUDH is home to me, and having worked alongside the university, the athletics staff and fellow coaches over the years will benefit me immensely in my new role as my staff and I look to build the Toros into a national contender."
