Seawolves Down Toros Volleyball in Three

Carson, CA - The Toros defense picked up more digs than their opponent for the second night in a row, but visiting Sonoma State used a .340 to .117 team hitting percentage advantage, 10 more kills and 17 less attacking errors to sweep past CSUDH, 30-22, 30-17, 30-16 in a Saturday afternoon contest in the Torodome.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 2-22, 1-12 CCAA and SSU improves to 9-12, 5-7 CCAA.

Sonoma State started quickly and never looked back in game one, jumping out to a 10-5 lead on a kill by Kaylee Aizenstadt, and then extending its lead to double digits at 26-16 on a Marianne Fox service ace.

Down 28-18, CSUDH began to show a little life and cut the deficit to six at 28-22 behind the serving of Marissa Anderson, but a pair of Toro attacking errors gave SSU its final two points in their game one win.

In the opener SSU was efficient from the service line, serving at least one point in all but three trips on serve.

Game two started off competitive with ties at 1-1, 8-8, 10-10 before the Toros took their first lead of the day at 11-10 on a kill by Lauren Wells.

A Sarah Hillier kill re-knotted the game on the next play, after which Lindsay Brown stepped back and serviced nine-straight points, with four coming via kills from Kristy Sather, to give SSU a 20-11 lead.

The teams traded sideouts over the next few plays until Marianne Fox serviced the last five points of the game to put the Seawolves up two heading into intermission.

Things did not get any better for CSUDH in game three as SSU continued to capitalize on long serving runs by multiple players to quickly dispatch of the Toros and take the match.

The Seawolves were led by Aizenstadt's .647 hitting percentage and 11 kills, with no attacking errors on the day.  Sather was also in double-figures with 11 kills, while Lillian Harms and Taylor Manton did the job in the back row, picking up 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Sophia Lopes recorded her team-leading 11th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs, while libero Jenise Espindola garnered game-high honors with 14 digs.

CSUDH hits the road for the next two weeks before returning on Saturday, November 10, to host Humboldt State, marking the final home match for four seniors in  Kayleigh Spratt, Tiffany Bull, Jenise Espindola and Sophia Lopes.
