No. 24 CSUDH Toughs Out 2-1 Win Over Cal State Stanislaus

Corrie Hirokawa notches a goal and assist as Toros bounce back after tough loss last week

Box Score
Carson, CA -- The 24th-ranked Toros showed their resiliency against a tough Cal State Stanislaus squad, taking a 2-1 win after a heart-breaking defeat last week against their cross-town rivals.  Senior Corrie Hirokawa notched a goal and an assist as CSUDH improved to 12-2-3, 7-2-2 CCAA, coming within two points of CCAA South Division leader UC San Diego with three games left in the regular season.

Hirokawa enjoyed the fastest goal of her Toro career just 18 seconds into the contest, taking a touch from Kelly Matosian after a scramble in the box and beating CSUS keeper Jessica Sitarz with a low blast near side for a very quick 1-nil lead.  The Warriors would answer CSUDH's goal at the 23:11 mark, however, as Adrienne Sorenson took a cross from Kaity Bojorquez, and beat Toro keeper Alyssa Congdon far post for the equalizer.

The Toros had a great chance in the 33rd minute as the ball bounced to Amy Livergood's feet a foot away from the goal, but a fast approaching Sitarz caused her shot to sail wide, keeping the game tied at 1-1 entering the half.

After the break, which featured the crowning of CSUDH's King and Queen at the Homecoming celebration, the Toros continued to pressure the Warriors with 9 shots compared to CSUS' 1, finally breaking through with the go-ahead sore at the 72:25 mark as Hirokawa sent a through ball to Yvonne Vasquez, whose shot evaded the Warrior's last line of defense in Sitarz top shelf.

The Toros dominated the contest to the tune of a 20-2 shot advantage, also notching 8 corners to the Warriors' 1.  Congdon tallied one save on the evening, benefitting from CSUDH's stellar defense, while Sitarz was credited with five saves in the loss.

CSUDH continues CCAA hosting duties with a Sunday afternoon match-up against the North Division leader Chico State, with first kick scheduled for 2:30 pm in Toro Stadium.
