BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield defeated visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 68-57 Saturday night at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Dominguez Hills drops to 8-13 and 5-9 with the loss.
Senior forward Antonio Griffin led Bakersfield with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Richard “Zeke” Andrews added 14 points and eight boards.
Junior guard Carlos Rivers came off the bench to lead Dominguez Hills with 12 points. Trevon Bryant scored 10 but played just 23 minutes due to foul trouble.
As has been the case recently, the Roadrunners dug themselves a big early hole. Settling for perimeter jump shots early in each possession, the Roadrunners shot just 13 percent over the opening 10 minutes as the Dominguez Hills steadily built its lead to as many as 12 points.
The Toros lead was still 12 at 37-25 with five minutes remaining in the first half. The Roadrunners got on track at that point, closing the half with a 14-3 run to trail just 40-39 at intermission.
The Toros held on by their fingernails in the opening minutes of the second half, reluctantly relinquishing their lead for the first time when a Zack Grasmick three-pointer put Bakersfield ahead to stay at 50-49. Grasmick's bomb ignited a 12-0 run that gave the Roadrunners their first double-digit lead at 59-49.
Dominguez made a late mini run to get within six at 59-53 with 2:21 to play. But the Roadrunners closed the game out strong, sandwiching a pair of layups between 5-of-5 free throw shooting in the final two minutes.
