Visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills and Biola went into extra innings Wednesday before the Eagles were able to bring across a run to defeat the Toros, 4-3, in a game that is considered an exhibition game for the Toros.
It was a game that looked good for the Toros up until the eighth inning. They were up 3-1 heading into the bottom half of the inning when they gave up a single to Chris Weems and then freshman, Hawkins Gebbers stepped up and tied the game with one swing as he hit his first collegiate home run.
The game was sent into extra innings when the Eagles could not finish it off as they left two men stranded in the ninth. In the tenth inning, Weems started things off with a double down the left field line and after a ground out and two intentional walks, Chris Willard came up and hit into a fielder's choice which sent pinch runner, Matt Love heading for home. Toros catcher Martin Conde, was unable to hang on to the ball as Love crossed the plate for the game-ending run.
The Eagles were led by senior Chris Willard who had three hits on the day including a solo shot that put Biola on the board in the seventh inning. Chris Weems also added two hits (2-5).
Senior Travis Lange started the game for the Eagles and after 7.0 innings was replaced by transfer Jack Creighton (1-0), who pitched 3.0 solid innings and picked up the win.
The Eagles faced a good team from Dominguez Hills which included the solid pitching (5.0 Inn, 4 hits, 0 ER) from lefty Ryan Owen. The Toros had two players with three hits. Houston Hernandez and Mateo Marquez went 3-5 and 3-4 respectively.
The Toros next take the field with a game at Cal Poly Pomona. It starts at 2 p.m.
