POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona's women's soccer team fell behind in the first 20 minutes of action and lost to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-7-1, 7-4-1) avenged a 2-1 loss to the Broncos in Carson in the CCAA opener for both teams and solidified its hold on second place in the CCAA South Division. Cal Poly Pomona (7-6-2, 5-5-2), meanwhile, lost its second straight game this weekend and fell for the fourth time in its last five games.
The Toros now have 22 points, while the Broncos remain in a tie for third with Cal State L.A. with 17 points. Cal State Dominguez Hills currently holds the fourth and final position for the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament with four matches remaining.
The Toros got the game's only goal just 19:50 into the match. Corrie Hirokawa notched her fifth goal of the season with an assist from Rachele McDonald. The play developed with McDonald making a run and chipping a pass to McDonald, who was able to shoot over Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Amanda Cunningham and knock the ball inside the far post.
That was the only goal in what was an evenly-contested match the rest of the way. Cunningham made seven saves for the Broncos, while Ashley DeAlejandro made three saves to record her fifth shutout of the season.
The Toros had a 15-9 advantage in shots. Hirokawa, McDonald and Kristen Boskovich had four shots each for Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Mary Carroll, Pamela Leyva, Cody McClure and Bethany Meichsner had two shots each for the Broncos.
The Toros now take a few days off before starting a two-match homestand next weekend. CSUDH entertains Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, with Cal State L.A. providing the opposition on Sunday.
