Phoenix, AZ -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Courtney Spainhour (Redondo Beach, CA/El Camino CC) tallied 18 kills and 15 digs as the Toros ended a five-match skid by besting Bentley College in the late match of the Grand Canyon Tournament, four hours after falling 3-0 to Western New Mexico in the opener. With the split, CSUDH improves to 5-12 on the season.
In the 30-19, 30-16, 25-30, 30-27 win over Bentley, Spainhour led a balanced Toro attack as Timary More (Torrance, CA/El Camino CC) and Amber Chauff (Westchester, CA/St. Monica HS) enjoyed double-digit kill totals of 12 and 11, respectively, while Maria Serrano (Lakewood, CA/Cerritos CC) and Sylvia Bonilla (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) contributed 13 and 10 respective digs as well.
After jumping out to convincing wins in the first two games, the Toros held off a game Bentley squad in taking game four, 30-27. In the match, CSUDH enjoyed a .168 to .118 hitting advantage over Bentley and was +6 in the service ace/service error category as the Toros served one more ace than error while Bentley committed five more errors than service aces. Bentley's Becca Rector was the only Falcon to tally double-figure kill totals as Spainhour, More and Chauff accounted for 41 of the Toros' 56 total kills in the win.
In the opening 30-25, 30-27, 30-16 loss against Western New Mexico, Spainhour paced the Toro attack with a team-best nine kills and nine digs, but CSUDH was unable to overcome the Mustangs' .306 hitting percentage for the match, which included three players who enjoyed double-digit kill efforts.
WNMU's Stephanie Higgings led the way with 19 kills, and was bolstered by Jennifer Snowbarger's 11 putaways and Janiel McNeill's 10 kills, the latter also enjoying a .421 hitting percentage. CSUDH's More contributed seven kills while Denise Herrera (El Monte, CA/ELAC) chimed in with six kills in the loss.
The Toros resume CCAA action next weekend as they travel to Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus the weekend of October 14-15. CSUDH then returns home to host Cal State Bakersfield in a mid-week conference showdown on Wednesday, October 19, in the Torodome.
