BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer team closed out the 2005 season on a high note with a 2-0 upset victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night on the Main Soccer Field.
Junior forward Taylar Sklar scored her team-best seventh and eighth goals of the season and goalkeeper Ashley Witten recorded 10 saves to ward of the powerful Toro offense.
Sklar opened the scoring with a nifty goal in the match's 14th minute. Freshman forward Moriah Neville sent a bouncing pass forward to Sklar who flipped the ball over the keeper's head and into the back of the net, all with her back to the goal.
The Roadrunners then survived an onslaught by the Dominguez Hills offense to take the one-goal lead to the half.
In the second half, the Toros had a number of great chances to net the equalizer, but were denied each time.
In the 68th minute, Sklar received a great pass from freshman midfielder Carli Godard, turned and fired a blast to the top corner from about 20 yards.
The Toros kept the pressure on after that, nearly scoring three times in a 10-minute span. Jennifer Jimenez took a point-blank shot in traffic off a corner kick only to have the blast stopped by Witten in the 73rd minute. The Bakersfield keeper also made a fantastic save just four minutes later on a close-range shot by Kristen Boskovich.
The match became very chippy in the waning minutes and finally deteriorated into an all-out brawl with 24 seconds remaining forcing the referee to end the match at that point. The scrap began when Bakersfield players came to the defense of Witten who was kicked by a Toro player after making a diving stop. Darcy Hubbard and Shelby Klippel were each given red cards as instigators of the fight.
The outcome was a measure of revenge for the Roadrunners, who lost a tough 2-1 overtime match to the Toros just 10 days ago. It was just the fifth time Bakersfield has defeated Dominguez Hills in 19 matches and the first Roadrunner win in the series since 2000.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, which drops to 13-5-2 overall and 8-4-2 in CCAA play, next plays in the CCAA tournament against host Cal State Stanislaus on Friday (Nov. 4) at 7 p.m.
Bakersfield ends its season with a 6-13-1 overall record and 5-9-0 in conference play after winning three of its final five matches.
