Steve Becker

Steve Becker returns for his 12th season at the helm of the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball program.

During his tenure with the Toros, Becker has reached the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament six consecutive seasons, has coached 16 all-conference selections and the program's first CCAA Freshman of the Year in Alex Garcia in 2018-19.

During the 2023-24 season the Toros were the CCAA Regular Season Champions for the fourth time in school history with an overall record of 22-5 and CCAA record of 17-4. Coach Becker was named the CCAA Coach of the Year and had five players earn all CCAA awards. With those five selections he also had a player named the CCAA Player of the Year in Jeremy Dent-Smith and Newcomer of the Year, Jacob Alamudun.

After missing the entire 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021-22 saw the Toros return and reach new heights during Becker's time at the helm as Dominguez Hills finished fifth, it's highest place in more than a decade, and reached the semifinal round of the CCAA Tournament.

While the 2019-20 saw the Toros make the conference tournament for the fourth consecutive season, Becker saw junior standout Colten Kresl become the program's all-time 3-pointers made record holder but he also broke a 34-year-old single-season mark.

The 2018-19 season was a season to remember for Becker as he not only coached Kresl to a first team and Wonder Smith to an honorable mention in the All-CCAA voting, but he also saw Alex Garcia capture the program's first CCAA Freshman of the Year trophy. That season also saw Kresl come up just five 3-point baskets short from breaking the program's single-season record held since the 1986-87 season.

He also coached Justin Sadler to the All-CCAA award three times and Vincent Golson to two.

In his second permanent season at the helm of the program, Becker compiled a best 15-12 overall record and a 11-9 CCAA record which qualified the Toros for their first conference tournament appearance in more than five years.

In a brief time as interim head coach at CSUDH, he doubled the number of CCAA victories over a 12-game span during the 2013-14 season, and helped place three Toros on All-CCAA teams last season.

Prior to his interim stint, Becker was the top assistant for the CSUDH men's basketball program during the 2012-13 campaign.

As CSUDH's top assistant, Becker was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, scouting, fundraising, coordinating all travel, academic advising, practice management, equipment & apparel, as well as serving as the program's compliance liaison.

Prior to becoming a Toro, Becker served as the director of basketball operations at NCAA Division I Cal State Fullerton in 2011-12 under head coach Bob Burton, where the Titans finished with a 21-10 record, just the 7th team in CSUF's 52-year history to reach the 20-win plateau, which was good for 2nd place in the Big West Conference.

Prior to CSUF, Becker served as an assistant boys varsity basketball coach at Fountain Valley High School and Marina High School, under Roger Holmes.

A southern California native who prepped at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Becker holds every assist record in MHS history, including most assists in a single game with 18, and was the team captain of Marina's 24-9 CIF Finalist team.

Intercollegiately, Becker produced one of the most prolific careers in Cal State Monterey Bay basketball history.  He was a member of the 2008-09 Otter squad that posted the program mark for wins in a season since become a Division II school, with his 98 games played still ranking No. 2 in school history, and his assists at No. 7.

Becker earned his degree in Human Communications from Cal State Monterey Bay in 2008, and his Master's from Concordia University Irvine in Coaching and Athletic Administration in May 2012. He and his wife, Staci, a physician, reside in Huntington Beach with their son Dominic and daughter Reagan.
