Jim Maier

The best way to put it: Jim Maier and Cal State Dominguez Hills softball go-hand-in-hand.

The program's winningest and longest serving head coach returned to the helm in October 2018 and will begin his sixth season since his return. In 16 seasons overall at CSUDH, Maier has coached five All-Americans, 24 all-regions, 65 All-CCAAs, two CCAA Players of the Year and one each CCAA Freshman and Newcomer of the Year.

During the 2024 season coach Maier had two players, Jay Ross and Mariah Ramirez, named All-CCAA First Team as well as receiving D2CCA and NFCA All-West Region honors. The 2024 season was historic as the Toros had a record-breaking outing. As they were making their way to the NCAA West Super Regional, the Toros broke the school record for the most team home runs in a single season, tallying 48 at the close of the season. The 2005 team, led by coach Maier in his fifth year at the helm of the program, held the previous record at 42 home runs in a season.

Since his return, Maier has turned the Toros into one of the best defensive teams in the nation, having owned the best fielding percentage in the West Region each of the last two seasons.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly canceled the remainder of the 2020 season, the Toros were 16-8 overall and 9-5 in the CCAA. The Toros owned the best fielding percentage in the NCAA West Region and was fifth in all of Division II. The Toros also ranked third in the region in stolen bases. For their efforts on the field, Chenoa Au, Jessica Lane and Alyssa Olague were selected to the one-time CCAA All-Star team.

In his first season back in Carson, Maier piloted the Toros back their winning ways, going 27-19 overall and 21-17 in the CCAA. In addition to leading the region in fielding percentage, the Toros finished ninth in the region in batting average, eighth in scoring and seventh in both on-base percentage and strikeout-to-walk ratio.

In between stints at CSUDH, Maier coached four seasons (2015-18) at CCAA rival Cal State San Bernardino, where he compiled a 128-90 record. The Coyotes had two CCAA Tournament and NCAA playoff berths during his tenure. He coached one All-American, four All-West Region and 14 All-CCAA honorees.

Maier was previously the CSUDH head coach for 13 years from 2001-13. He collected two CCAA titles, seven NCAA playoff appearances and sported an overall record of 460-273-2. During his first stint he coached five All-Americans, two CCAA MVP, 22 All-West Region and 62 All-CCAA selections.

Maier was first hired at CSUDH in 2001 and turned things around quickly. He guided the team to 36 wins in his first year, matching the previous record for wins in a season. Two years later, in 2003, the Toros made their first of four consecutive NCAA playoff appearances and collected back-to-back 46-win campaigns in 2005-06. Maier was named the CCAA Coach of the Year as CSUDH won the conference title in 2005. Additionally, Cindy Perry-Brown was named the CCAA MVP and to the All-America team that year. The Toros made it to the NCAA West Region Finals in 2006, their deepest postseason run at the time.

CSUDH returned to the NCAA playoffs in 2008 and made it to the regional semifinals. The Toros saw four consecutive CCAA Tournament appearances from 2010-13 and made it to the NCAA West Super Regionals in the last two of those seasons. CSUDH was crowned CCAA regular season co-champions during the 2012 campaign. In his final four years in his first stint, Maier coached three All-Americans in Emily McEwen (2010), Stephanie Jimenez (2013) and Adriana Sanchez (2013).

Maier coached at St. Paul HS in Santa Fe Springs on two different occasions. He served his first stint from 1987-2000, and his second in 2014 between his appointments at CSUDH and CSUSB. He guided St. Paul to the 1988 CIF-Southern Section Division 4A and 2014 CIF-Southern Section Division III titles and compiled a 328-81-1 record in his 15-year tenure. He coached 25 players who earned college scholarships, including nine at the NCAA Division I level.

Maier graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1987 and earned his master’s degree in athletic administration from Azusa Pacific in 1995. He and his wife, Lori, reside in La Habra and are the parents of three sons: Jake, Jared and Kyle. Jake, who was a standout quarterback at UC Davis, signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League in the spring of 2020. Jared is currently on his father's coaching staff, guiding the Toros from the third base coach's box.
