HAYWARD, Calif. -- Less than 24 hours after taking a dramatic walk-off win to kick off the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills fell flat today against top-seeded and well-rested Cal State San Marcos in a 5-0 setback, bringing the Cardinal and Gold to an elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 pm against No. 3 seed Cal Poly Humboldt, which was walked off in today's late game by No. 2 seed Cal State East Bay.
The winner of the CSUDH/CPH match-up will face the loser of the CSUSM/CSUEB game immediately following the 12:30 pm contest.
After scoring thrice in their first at-bat yesterday, the Toros managed just one hit in each of the first two innings, courtesy of an
Ashley Goodale single in the first and a
Savanna Kastigar two-out double in the top of the second.
The Cougars, ranked No. 4 in the nation, replied to those two hits, scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good, adding a single run in the fourth and two more an inning later to account for the game's scoring.
The Toros managed two more hits in the contest, but failed to advance a runner past second base in the shutout as
Gaby Gandara led CSUDH with two hits.
Ashley Ogata took the loss (16-5) in 4.0 innings of work, fanning four with two earned runs against.
The Lumberjacks took three of the four games against the Toros, outscoring CSUDH 24-21 in Arcata on March 20-21. In the series,
Marisa Dominguez went 8-for-16 with four runs scored and an RBI, and was bolstered by
Michaela Meza's 7-for-14 effort with four RBI and three runs scored. Kastigar added a 2-for-3, four RBI effort with a home run in CSUDH's lone win as Ogata picked up the victory.
