Bats Go Quiet as Toros Leave Chico with CCAA-Opening Series Split

CHICO, Calif. — Cal State Dominguez Hills was limited to two hits Sunday morning as Chico State pulled away for a 10–0 win in the finale of a four-game CCAA series at Nettleton Stadium. With the result, the Toros and Wildcats each claimed two games in the opening CCAA series of the season.

The Toros (10-7, 2-2 CCAA) kept Chico State off the scoreboard through three innings behind right-hander Zachary Lopez, but the Wildcats (13-9, 2-2 CCAA) broke through in the fourth on a wild pitch, scoring the game's first run.

Chico State then delivered the decisive blow in the fifth. After back-to-back singles and a hit batter loaded the bases, the Wildcats capitalized with a pair of RBI walks before a three-run double down the right-field line extended the lead to 6–0.

Dominguez Hills' best opportunity came in the sixth after Elijah Scott and Deegan Grgas drew consecutive walks to open the inning, but Chico State turned a line-drive double play and escaped the threat.

The Wildcats added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI double, RBI triple, and another run that scored on a wild pitch. Chico State tacked on one more in the eighth to close the scoring.

Nigel Buckley and Ben Saitz recorded the Toros' lone hits, while Dominguez Hills' finished with four baserunners overall. The Toros were unable to advance a runner past third base in the contest.

Lopez (2-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs over 4.1 innings. Dominguez Hills used four pitchers in relief, but seven walks, two hit batters, and three wild pitches helped Chico State generate multiple scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon.

Cal State Dominguez Hills returns home next weekend to continue CCAA play against the defending conference champions Cal State Monterey Bay. Game one of the four-game series is Friday at 3 p.m.
