Toros roll in opener, split day one at CUI Kickoff Classic

IRVINE, Calif. — Cal State Dominguez Hills opened the 2026 softball season with a split on Friday at the CUI Kickoff Classic at Great Park, rolling past Colorado State Pueblo in the opener before falling to Dominican (Cal.) in the nightcap.

The Toros earned a 9–1 win in five innings in the first game of the day, then saw a late rally come up short in a 5–2 loss to Dominican in the second game.

Game 1: Cal State Dominguez Hills 9, Colorado State Pueblo 1 (5 innings)

Cal State Dominguez Hills wasted little time setting the tone for the new season, scoring twice in the first inning and breaking the game open with a six-run third.

Makayla Bishop helped lead the offense from the top of the lineup, going 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Ashley Goodale drove in three runs, including a two-run single in the third inning, while Marisa Dominguez finished 2-for-2 with a walk, a run and a stolen base. Savanna Kastigar added an RBI double, and Andrea Tellez highlighted the fourth inning with a solo home run.

In the circle, Ashley Ogata struck out five batters over three innings, allowing one run on one hit. Audrey Gallegos and Brooke Umali combined to close out the final two frames as the Toros capitalized on five CSU Pueblo errors to secure the season-opening victory.

Game 2: Dominican (Cal.) 5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2

Dominican used timely hitting and productive outs to build an early lead in the nightcap, scoring single runs in the second, third and fifth innings before adding two more in the sixth.

The Toros kept the game within reach behind solid pitching from Brooke Umali, who worked 4.2 innings, but the offense struggled to convert scoring opportunities until the final frame.

Trailing 5–0 in the seventh inning, Cal State Dominguez Hills mounted a bases-loaded rally. Makayla Bishop drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Toros on the board, and Ashley Goodale followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to three. Dominican reliever Nayellys Torres-Gonzalez entered with the tying run at the plate and closed out the game to earn the save.

Goodale finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in the nightcap, while Bishop reached base three times with two walks and an RBI. Alexis Verduzco earned the win for Dominican after allowing two runs over six innings.

After Friday's doubleheader, the Toros return to Great Park on Saturday to continue play at the CUI Kickoff Classic, facing Western Oregon at 8 a.m. before closing the day against Menlo at 4 p.m.
