Box Score CARSON -- Sophomore guard
Zanna Hurst poured in a game-high 19 points that included 15 points from 3-point land as Cal State Dominguez Hills took down visiting Chico State in convincing fashion, holding the Wildcats to just one basket from 3-point land en route to a 64-57 win.
The Toros hand the Wildcats just their second loss in conference and improve to 5-13 overall and 5-8 in the CCAA.
CSUDHÂ used a smothering defense to hold the Wildcats to under 40% shooting from the floor, but their defense paid huge dividends from behind the arc as Chico misfired on its first 11 attempts from downtown before finally connecting on a long-range shot that banked in with just 19 seconds left in a game that was all but decided.
Hurst, who connected on five triples on her own, added two free throws, while
Bryanne Lopez-Wood chipped in 10 points and a team-best nine boards in CSUDH's most complete game this season, which saw a spirited after following two-straight setbacks.
The Toros used a 6-2 run to break a 5-5 tie in the first quarter before settling for a 16-15 edge after one, further increasing their advantage with a stellar second quarter in which they held Chico State to just six points and 14.3% shooting from the floor en route to taking a 33-21 lead entering the half.
Hurst continued her offensive play with 12 points in the first two periods, connecting on four of her triples in the frame.
The third quarter was more of the same as CSUDH's defense limited Chico to just 11 points while stretching its lead to 46-32 entering the final frame. The Wildcats found their stroke at the end by whittling their deficit to just seven, but the Toros drained five of their final six free throw attempts to put the game away in the eventual 64-57 victory.
The Toros scored 22 points off of 20 Wildcat turnovers, helped by a +4 in steals.
Tiara Jones was huge as the floor general, assisting on five buckets to pace CSUDH.
The Toros look to make it two straight on Saturday as Cal Poly Humboldt pays the Torodome a visit, with tip set for 1:00 pm.
