Toros Battle to the End in CCAA Tournament

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills softball saw its run at the CCAA Tournament come to a close Wednesday afternoon in a 4-3 defeat to third-seeded Cal State San Marcos at Seawolf Softball Field. The Toros wrap up the conference postseason with a 32-25 overall record, still in strong position at No. 9 in the West Region as they await the NCAA Tournament selection.

In a competitive elimination matchup, the Toros matched the Cougars punch-for-punch, collecting five hits and putting together a three-run surge in the third and fifth innings.

Trailing 2-0 after two innings, the Toros got on the board in the third after Alexis Aguado legged out an infield single and advanced to third on a groundout and single by Jay Ross. Mireya Rico then put the ball in play to score Aguado and cut the deficit in half.

The fifth inning brought more life to the Toro bats. Aguado roped a double to left and scored along with Gaby Gandara after Ross snuck a clutch two-run single past second base to give CSUDH a 3-2 lead. It was the second hit of the day for Ross, who continued her hot postseason form.

San Marcos responded in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs on a pair of well-placed hits, reclaiming the lead at 4-3. Despite a clean sixth inning defensively and a solid outing from Ashley Ogata in the circle, the Toros were unable to manufacture any offense late. A 1-2-3 seventh sealed their fate and ended their run in the conference tournament.

Aguado finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Ross added two hits and two RBIs. The senior outfielder now has eight RBIs in her last six games.

While the Toros' time at the CCAA Tournament came to an end, their season may not be over just yet. CSUDH currently sits at No. 9 in the NCAA West Regional rankings and will await word on a potential bid to the NCAA Tournament. Regional selections are set to be announced Sunday, May 5.
