CARSON, Calif,.- Cal State Dominguez Hills softball battled hard but came up short in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Sonoma State, falling 3-1 and 2-1 in extra innings to close the four-game CCAA series. The Toros head home with a 27-20 overall record and an even 14-14 mark in conference play after the series split.
Game 1:Â
The Toros struck first in the opener behind an RBI groundout from Mireya Rico that scored Alexis Aguado in the top of the first. Jay Ross stayed hot at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 and reaching base all three times. Aguado added a pair of hits and scored the lone run for CSUDH, while Lillianna Garcia and Gaby Gandara also contributed base hits.
Starter Ashley Ogata turned in another solid effort in the circle, allowing just three earned runs over six innings on seven hits and no walks. The Seawolves capitalized on a two-run third to take the lead and held off CSUDH despite several late threats.
Game 2:Â
In the series finale, CSUDH and Sonoma State found themselves locked in a pitchers' duel that needed extra innings to settle. Garcia's sacrifice fly in the fourth brought home Ross for the Toros' only run, and Ogata kept the Seawolves off balance most of the way. The right-hander tossed 7.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on eight hits.
Aguado stole two bases and went 1-for-4, while Ross again reached base twice and scored a run. The Toros recorded four hits in the contest, but timely hits from the Seawolves in the seventh and eighth innings made the difference.
