CARSON, Calif. – Survive and advance. The No. 1 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team is heading to the Sweet 16 after battling past No. 4 seed Alaska Anchorage, 63-61, in the NCAA West Regional Semifinals at the Torodome. With the win, the Toros improve to 33-1 overall and move one step closer to the Elite Eight. The 33 wins this season set a new program record, surpassing the previous mark of 31 wins set in the 2022-23 season, when the Toros were West Region champions and advanced to the Elite 8.
The Toros set the tone early, jumping out to a 23-14 lead behind senior forward Asia Jordan, who dominated inside. Jordan was aggressive from the start, scoring nine of the Toros' first 12 points and setting the defensive tone with key rebounds. Cristina Jones added a strong presence in the paint, helping Dominguez Hills establish an early advantage.
Dominguez Hills continued to push the pace, extending their lead to 42-32 at halftime. Jordan continued her stellar play, reaching double figures before the break, while Nala Williams facilitated the offense with five first-half assists. The Toros' defense remained locked in, forcing Alaska Anchorage into eight first-half turnovers, leading to 12 points off turnovers.
Momentum shifted after halftime as Alaska Anchorage held Dominguez Hills to just five points in the third quarter. The Toros struggled offensively, shooting 12.5% from the field, while the Seawolves capitalized on second-chance opportunities to trim the deficit to 47-49 heading into the final quarter.
With the game hanging in the balance, the Toros leaned on their defense and senior leadership. Jordan delivered when it mattered most, scoring seven points in the final frame, including a crucial fast-break layup with one second left to seal the win. Dominguez Hills limited Alaska Anchorage to 17.6% shooting in the final quarter, proving why they boast the top defense in the CCAA.
