Toros Split Doubleheader at Concordia with Dominant Game One Victory

IRVINE, Calif. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros split its road doubleheader against Concordia University Irvine on Saturday afternoon, claiming a commanding 14-5 victory in the opener before falling 7-4 in the nightcap. The Toros now sit at 2-4 on the early 2025 season.

Game one:
Toros exploded for 14 runs on 17 hits to secure a dominant 14-5 win over Concordia University Irvine in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Golden Eagles Field. The Toros jumped out early with three runs in the first before a six-run fourth inning broke the game wide open.

Alex Sepulveda led the offensive charge, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two doubles, while Quinn Johnson added a 3-for-5 performance with an RBI and a double. Teige Barrett also played a key role, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Jacob Pfitzner chipped in with two hits and three RBIs, and Emilio Barrera crossed the plate three times.

On the mound, Evan Vazquez (1-0) delivered a strong start, tossing six innings while allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. The bullpen closed the door, with Julian Castro, Aiden Taylor, and Blake Logan combining to allow just one run over the final three innings.

The Toros sealed the win with a four-run eighth inning, highlighted by Barrett's two-run single and a sacrifice fly from Dylan Schumacher.

Game two:

Despite a late-inning push, Cal State Dominguez Hills could not overcome an early deficit, falling 7-4 to Concordia University Irvine in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Golden Eagles struck first, plating three runs in the third before adding four more in the fifth to take control. The Toros responded in the fifth when Barrett doubled to left center, setting up Nigel Buckley for an RBI double to put CSUDH on the board. Noah Karliner provided a spark in the sixth with a solo home run to left field, and Barrett later added a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to three.

Karliner finished 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI, while Barrett drove in two runs on a 1-for-3 day. Buckley contributed an RBI double, and Johnson and Sepulveda each recorded two hits.

On the mound, Justin Abercrombie (0-1) took the loss despite a solid outing, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four over four innings. Chris Cornelius, Julian Castro, and Bryan Kraft combined for the final two frames, with Kraft tossing a scoreless inning.

The Toros will look to bounce back as they continue non-conference play next week.

Toros will returnn home to conclude the series against CUI on Monday, February 10th at 1pm in a makeup game from February 6th.
