CARSON, Calif. – In a dramatic conclusion to their four-game series, Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros rallied late to edge past Concordia University Irvine, 14-13, on Monday afternoon at Toro Field. The win secured a series split, with both teams taking two games apiece.
After falling behind 5-0 early, the Toros erupted for an eight-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Jacob Pfitzner and an RBI double from Teige Barrett. Quinn Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk, capping off the inning as Dominguez Hills stormed ahead. The Eagles responded with a strong middle-inning push, reclaiming the lead with four runs in the fifth to go up 11-8.
Trailing 12-10 in the eighth, the Toros again found late-game magic. Dominik Cervantes laced a clutch two-run single to center to tie the game before Johnson delivered a go-ahead RBI single. An error by the Eagles' defense allowed an insurance run to score, giving Dominguez Hills a 14-12 advantage heading into the ninth.
Julian Castro (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing just one earned run. J. Gaitan recorded the save, securing the final three outs despite a late unearned run by the Eagles.
Offensively, Johnson led the charge with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Barrett and Jared Anderson each tallied two hits, while Cervantes came up big off the bench with a pair of RBIs. Pfitzner and Emilio Barrera each drove in multiple runs, helping fuel the offensive onslaught.
The Toros return to action on Friday, Feb. 14th, hosting La Sierra University in a doubleheader at Toro Field, with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
