CARSON -- Sophomore
Zanna Hurst led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor, but visiting Cal State East Bay outscored the hosts 30-19 in the pivotal final frame to take a 76-65 decision over the Toros tonight in the Torodome.
With the loss, CSUDH falls to 1-7 overall, and 1-2 in CCAA play.
Hurst began the scoring with a triple on the Toros' first possession of the game, before a Hurst fast-break bucket gave CSUDH a 7-3 at the 5:47 mark of the first period. Another fast-break basket, this time courtesy of
Bryanne Lopez-Wood, pushed the Toros to their largest lead of the period at 13-7 three minutes later, only to have the Pioneers outscore the hosts 8-2 to close their deficit to 17-15.
The second quarter saw both offenses start cold over the first 1:24 of the frame until the Pios knotted the game at 17-17 at the 8:36 mark. Baskets by Lopez-Wood and Hurst, however, gave the Toros a 21-17 lead 37 seconds later, only to see CSUEB claw back and outscore CSUDH 17-9 over the final eight minutes to take a 34-30 lead into the half.
Leilani Abraham began the second-half scoring with a deep three a minute into the 3rd quarter, with a pair of Lopez-Wood freebies regaining the lead for the Toros. The two teams continued to trade baskets over the next five minutes until the Pios stretched their lead to four points with 4:56 left in the frame.
The Toros, however, used a Hurst bucket in the paint and a pair of free throws by Luvlee Sadler to take a 46-43 lead at the 2:19 mark and clung to a 46-45 lead entering the final frame.
An
A'moree Ferrel 3-pointer gave CSUDH a 49-45 lead a minute into the 4th quarter, only to have the Pios go on a 10-0 run to steal momentum away from the hosts at the 5:54 mark.
CSUEB's lead grew to 15 at 67-52 two minutes later to all but put the game away at the 3:02 mark.
An
Anela Thomas layup gave the Toros hope by cutting their deficit to 70-62 with 22 ticks left in regulation, but CSUDH would get no closer than seven the rest of the way in the eventual 10-point setback.
Ferrel added 14 and Lopez-Wood 12 in the loss as the Toros were out-rebounded by 13 and out-scored by 46-26 in the paint.
CSUDH will look to even its CCAA ledger on Sunday afternoon as San Francisco State visits Carson for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
