SAN MARCOS -- Five Cal State Dominguez Hills hitters knocked two hits as part of a 13-hit attack as the Toros won their second-straight game after a 5-3 win over host Cal State San Marcos in the fourth and final game of the CCAA series that was postponed from last month due to rain.
Vincent Temesvary continued his hot-hitting campaign with a 3-for-4 effort while
Eric Smelko (pictured) went 2-for-5 and drove home what proved to be the game-winning run.
Riding momentum from Saturday's win, the Toros used a Cougar error to plate their first run in the top of the 3rd, only to have CSUSM answer with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
CSUDH answered that with a pair of runs the next inning, courtesy of an
Aaron Greenfield RBI double, which was followed by an
Eric Smelko RBI single to make it 3-1.
Like the inning before, CSUSM matched the Toros' output, tying the game with two in the 4th.
That's where the score remained until Temesvary led off the 6th with a double to the right centerfield gap and was replaced by pinch-runner
Caleb Ellis. Ellis' speed paid dividends as he raced home from second base on Smelko's knock to right center to give the Toros a 4-3 lead.
The Toro offense gave their bullpen a much-needed insurance run in the 9th after
Emilio Barrera pulled a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a
Miguel Marin sacrifice bunt, and came home on a
Brock Denbo suicide squeeze.
The bullpen of reliever
Josh Castillo,
Sam Gomez, and
Julian Diaz threw 5.1 innings of scoreless ball, with Castillo picking up the win to move to 1-1, and Diaz tossing 2.0 for his first save of the year.
The Toros host Cal State East Bay for a key CCAA series starting Friday at Toro Field, with first pitch set for 3 pm.
