CARSON -- Second-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills opened their home schedule with a 6-1 and 6-0 sweep over visiting Hawai'i Pacific this afternoon behind
Alyssa Olague's 1-hit gem and
Alex Davis' (pictured) grand slam in the nightcap and production from newcomers
Jay Ross and
Nayah Pola in the opener.
CSUDHÂ improves to 5-2 on the young season.
After the visitors got on the board to open game one's scoring, the hosts took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning with three runs.Â
Maiya Lopez tied the game with a double to plate Ross, before scoring herself on a
Sydney Diaz, who scored herself on a
Raquel Jaime knock through the left side.
That's where the score remained until the 4th when Pola brought home two runners before Davis brought her home two batters later with the game's final run.
Olague picked up the win after 4.0 innings of work, fanning five of the 15 batters she faced.
That proved to be a tune-up for Olague as she dominated the Sharks in the nightcap, retiring the first 20 batters she faced to bring her to within one out from tossing the program's first no-no since 2016.  With two out in the top of 7th, however, Noel Saunders broke up the no-hitter by belting the first pitch she saw up the middle to end the suspense.
Olague wasn't fazed as she retired the final batter of the game for a complete-game masterpiece.
Davis provided all the offense Olague would need in the 3rd as she took a 2-1 offering and hammered a no-doubter over the left field fence to break the scoreless tie and set off a grand celebration at home plate.
Pola again came up big an inning later with a 2RBI knock to end her 2-for-3 effort in the nightcap.
Olague fanned four against just one walk in the sweep.
CSUDH resumes non-conference home action on Saturday as Azusa Pacific pays Toro Diamond a visit for a 12 pm game one.
Prior to the contest, the Toros will unveil their 2022 NCAA West Region Championship banner at approximately 11:30 am.
