Lucky 13! No. 20 Toros Excel Defensively in Second Half to Keep Streak Going

CHICO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team continues to dominate the scoring against CCAA foes. On Thursday, Chico State was added to the list of victims after the No. 20 Toros ran away in the second half to post a 72-50 win over the Wildcats at Acker Gymnasium to extend their record to 13-0.

The Toros also improve to 7-0 in the CCAA, keeping pace with No. 16 Cal State San Marcos for the top of the standings. The Cougars were also victorious at Cal State San Bernardino the same night.

Chico (8-5, 4-3 CCAA) had a 34-33 lead at halftime, but the Toros returned to the floor and stampeded the 'Cats 38-17 in the second half to run away to keep their best start to any season in the program's history alive.

Freshman Nala Williams scored 21 points, coming up one point short from tying her career-high. She also made half of the Toros' 3-point shots. Asia Jordan dropped in 13 points and added seven rebounds while Joe'l Benoit came up both a point and a rebound shy from a double-double.

Dominguez Hills made 47.5 percent of its shots while limiting Chico to 34 percent.

The Toros, who lead the rebounding margin with an average of 8.7 per game in conference, play, dominated the glass 40-30.

Although the Toros won the first quarter, 20-16, the 'Cats claimed the second period to take the lead into intermission. While the Toros racked up the points in the second half, they held the 'Cats to 6-for-24 from the field including just two 3-pointers.

The Toros wrap up the three-game road trip in the Central Valley, visiting last-place Stanislaus State for a Saturday showdown at 1 p.m.
