Chico State Stuns No. 4/6 Toros on Last-Second Triple

CARSON -- Leading by two with :17 left in regulation after being down by as much as 23 in the second half, the No. 4/6 ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team saw its perfect season come to an end in dramatic fashion as Chico State's Myli Martinez nailed a 3-pointer with just one second left on the clock to stun the host Toros and hand them their first loss of the year.

Nala Williams (pictured) and Dawnyel Lair enjoyed double-doubles in the loss that drops the Toros to 19-1 overall, and 13-1 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats played like a nationally-ranked top 10 team in the first 20 minutes of play, hitting 51.7% of their shots from the floor and 53.8% from down town en route to taking a 45-27 halftime lead.

Things continued to look bleak for the hosts as their deficit reached 23 points at 54-31 with 5:58 left in the third quarter.

That's when an old-fashioned 3-point play by Williams and Lair layup shaved Chico's lead to just 54-36 33 seconds later.

After the Wildcats stopped the run, CSUDH capped the frame with an 8-0 run, heading into the final period down 58-48 after Lair connected with just four seconds left.

Producing on the offensive end to conclude the third, Lair produced on the defensive end to begin the fourth, tallying one of her three steals, leading to a Danyell Booker fastbreak bucket to get to within eight.

Another old-fashioned 3-point play by Lair brought the Toros to within 62-60 at the 6:08 mark, before Lair got the Toros over the hump a few minutes later with a fastbreak basket to give CSUDH a 65-64 lead.

The two teams exchanged the lead six times over the next 3:23, with the Toros taking a 72-70 after Williams sank one of two free throws.

Chico State, however, enjoyed the final word as Martinez connected fourth and most important triple of the game, giving the Wildcats the lead for good.

Booker chipped in 12 points and Joe'l Benoit 11 in the setback, as the Toros suffered from a cold shooting night behind the arc, making just two in 16 attempts.

CSUDH travels to CS San Bernardino on Thursday for a 5:30 pm tip.
