SEASIDE -- After winning the first two sets tonight at Cal State Monterey Bay, visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills couldn't hold off the resilient hosts as the Otters pulled off a 14-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-12 come-from-behind win to open the conference weekend.
Ava Hurry led the Toros with 16 kills as CSUDH falls to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in CCAA action.
The Toros started hot in the Kelp Bed with a 7-1 surge, thanks in large part to the strong serving of
Jenna Sandall and
Angelina Robles.
CSUMB got as close as two points at 11-9 before three-consecutive CSUDH kills forced an Otter timeout. That only delayed the inevitable as CSUDH's lead increased to double figures at 10-10 on a hammer by
Jesi Diekmann before a Monterey Bay attack error gave the visitors a 25-14 win in which CSUDH hit .395, hammering home 17 kills against just two attack errors.
Set two nearly mirrored the opener as CSUDH raced to a 7-2 edge, pushing its advantage to 17-10 on a Robles service ace. That seemed to wake the home team up as a CSUMB 8-5 brought the hosts to within 22-18.
An Otter attack error and kill by Sandall, however, brought the Toros to set point and after a slight surge by CSUMB to get to within four, setter Angelia Cabal made her first of three kills in the match a memorable one, giving the Toros the set and a two-sets-to-none edge.
That's when CSUMB began its comeback, hitting .344 in the third set while holding CSUDH to a negative hitting percentage to cut its deficit in half.
The Otters used that momentum to take a 9-5 lead early, before the Toros tied the frame at 11-11 on a Sandall ace. The teams tied five more times down the stretch, the last at 22-22, before the hosts reeled off the final three points of the set to even the match at two.
CSUMB took a 4-1 lead in the decisive set, only to have the Toros go on a 9-6 run to knot the set at 10-10. After the teams split the next four points to tie at 12, the Otters completed their comeback by winning the final three points to take the match.
Shelby Saporetti added 13 kills and
Samaya Royal 11 to give CSUDH three players with double-figure kills, with Robles and Sandall each contributing three aces.
The Toros will look to snap their six-match skid tomorrow afternoon as they travel to San Francisco State for a 5 pm first serve.
