CARSON -- Just hours after being named the California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer Player of the Week, sophomore
Sulaiman Bah picked up where he left off as he tallied a goal and assist to help Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 3-1 win over Biola on a hot afternoon in Toro Stadium.
With the win, CSUDH improves to 3-0 on the year, last achieving this feat during the 2011 campaign, and has outscored its opponents 10-2.
The game was scoreless for the first 22 minutes of play, until the hosts scored a pair of goals in a four-minute span. The opening tally came courtesy of
Martin Velasquez, who took a quick feed from
Alpha Sowe about 23 yards in front of the Biola goal and hit a quick left-footer to the left of the Eagle keeper JD Gunn for a 1-0 lead.
Bah then got in on the assist action less than four minutes later, sending a cross over three Biola defenders to a waiting
Christian Briseno, who one-timed it past Gunn to double the score.
That's where the score remained until after the break when the Eagles cut their deficit in half in the 53rd minute.
Continuing to pepper the Biola defense by out-shooting the Eagles 10-7 after intermission, CSUDH's aggressive play finally paid dividends at the 72:34 mark as Bah tallied his league-leading fifth goal of the season to give the Toros an insurance goal.
An aggressive battle, the two teams combined for 33 fouls and seven cautions, with each side making four saves.
In goal,
Sebastian Ascencio picked up the win, his third in the young season.
CSUDH hosts Point Loma on Saturday to continue its non-conference schedule, with first kick set for 4:30 pm in Toro Stadium.
