Wies' Brilliant Outing Spoiled by Otters Rally in CCAA Tournament Quarterfinal

SEASIDE – Facing the second elimination in the CCAA Softball Tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills was ahead for a majority of the game but host Cal State Monterey Bay rallied on a few critical hits and walked off on a wild pitch to post a 3-2 win over the Toros Saturday.

The Toros' CCAA Tournament run comes to an end, but they do have an impressive resume to qualify for NCAA Regionals as an at-large. They will wait until Monday at 7 a.m. to hear if their name will be called. The show can be found by clicking here.

Ashley Wies, coming off a difficult loss to the same Otters team in the tournament opener Thursday, rebounded and pitched stellar on Saturday, going 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. She did allow one walk and six of the Otters seven hits.

The Toros was all on the offensive at a windy Otter Sports Complex, gathering nine hits including a double off of Jensen Main, who had been haunting Dominguez Hills. In fact, it was the sixth time in a week that these two ballclubs have seen each other and are hoping to not see each other in regionals next week.

After both sides put zeroes on the board for three innings, the Toros broke through in the next two after. Starting in the fourth, Claudia Valencia got on with a single, stole second and scored on Dafne Bravo's base hit to right center.

The Otters made an attempt to score the tying run in their half of the fourth inning when a base hit went to Alex Davis, who made cannon of a throw to home for Maiya Lopez for the tag to end the inning.

Dominguez Hills got their second run in the fifth inning in a wise fashion. With Amara Labonog at third, Raquel Jaime hit a fly ball that was caught at medium left field. Labonog made the sprint home and appeared to be tagged out, but the catcher mishandled the ball and Valencia, the on deck hitter, told her teammate to tag home plate and was confirmed safe by the home plate umpire, giving the Toros a 2-0 lead.

While Wies pitched herself out of trouble in the fifth inning with two runners on base, the seventh inning became a bit shaky for her. A single and a critical fielding error allowed the Otters to have runners on with one out. A double to right scored in the first run and put the tying and winning runs into scoring position. ClaRisa Ramirez, the hero in Friday's emotional win over Chico State, tried to stop the bleeding but an RBI single and a wild pitch brought the two runs home to end the game.
