Toros Stampeded by Broncos to Wrap up Regular Season

POMONA – The baseball regular-season is over…now comes the win or go home situation.

After Cal Poly Pomona walloped Cal State Dominguez Hills 11-1 at Scolinos Field Sunday, the Toros will gladly put the CCAA schedule behind and start thinking about the postseason. The Toros will now head to Chico State to participate in the CCAA Baseball Championship.

The good news: the Toros are in it for the first time since 2015.

The bad news: the six-seeded Toros will have to play the host Wildcats in their own ballpark in an elimination game. The winner will move on to the four-team double-elimination bracket Thursday. The winner of the CCAA Tournament will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.

While Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona were in a tie for second place at 27-12, the two sides easily broke the tie since they played only three games, which the Broncos took two from in Pomona, making the 'Cats the unlucky team that will need to face the pressure of possibly being eliminated in one day.

Sunday's closing of the 2022 returning regular season all belonged to Cal Poly Pomona, which racked up 11 runs on as many hits and nine walks.

The Toros saw only five hits on the day.

The Broncos scored their first run in the second inning, added two more in the third inning, four in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 10-run lead.

Dominguez Hills' only run in the game came in the eighth, when Eric Smelko hit a sacrifice fly to center to score in Caleb Ellis.
