Softball Can't Close Out Eagles, Forced to Play Winner-Take-All After Nine-Inning Loss

IRVINE – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team made a valiant effort rallying from being four runs down, but host No. 2 seed Concordia held on to beat the No. 6 Toros 8-6 in nine innings to force a winner-take-all game in about 30 minutes after the completion of this game.

The winner will meet the West Region's top-seeded Cal State San Marcos in the Super Regional next week.

Down by two in the seventh, the Toros got a rally started on the benefit of an Eagle error and a walk. Maiya Lopez came up clutch with a two-run single to right to tie the game with two outs. The Eagles loaded the bases by intentionally walking Chenoa Au and got out of the game-ending threat with a groundout.

Both sides went quiet in the eighth. But the Eagles got to Ashley Wies by loading the bases with one out and scored two runs on a single and a bases-loaded walk. Alex Davis got on base in the Toros' half of the ninth with a one-out double but was left stranded.

It was indeed a rough day for both lineups. While 23 total hits were made, each side left a handful of runners on base. Concordia left 10, CSUDH left 12.

Alyssa Olague got the starting nod for the third consecutive game in this tournament. But with it being the second time the Eagles have seen the right-hander, they scored five runs off of her. She did strike out five.

Concordia got on the board right off the bat with a solo home run in the first. After a controversial call at the plate on a possible swing-and-a-miss, the Eagles got to see the next pitch and delivered two runs to make it 3-0.

The Toros did get a run on the benefit of an error to score in the first run. They cut the score down to 5-4 in the fifth inning. Au was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, Kianna Abellera reached on an error, and Amara Labonog knocked in Au with a base hit to right. Kaylee Hull followed with a clutch-hitting two-run double down the right-field line to bring the deficit down to one.

Wies, who came into relief in the sixth, went the rest of the way striking out four but issues five hits and three walks.
