Toros Beat Yotes in Elimination Bracket to Setup Rematch with Broncos for CCAA Tourney Title

CHICO – Quoting from legendary broadcaster Jack Buck: 'We will see you tomorrow {at noon}.'

Shortly after Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped a heartfelt decision to Cal Poly Pomona, the Toros bounced back and beat Cal State San Bernardino 12-3 in the elimination bracket semifinal to setup a rematch with the Broncos in the CCAA Baseball Championship Saturday.

It will be the first time since 2015 the Toros will be playing for the CCAA Championship.

But the quest for the crown will not be easy.

The No. 6 Toros must use what's left in this magical run they are using and beat the Broncos twice to win the CCAA Tournament title and receive the conference's automatic berth to NCAA Regionals. First pitch at Nettleton Stadium is at noon.

With their backs against the wall for the second time in this tournament, the Toros saw themselves behind after the Yotes scored twice in the second, highlighted by a solo home run by Kyle Csakan, who clobbered his 21st home run to tie Scott Ogrin for the conference's lead in that column.

Ogrin, who broke the program's single-season home run record in the loss to Pomona, reclaimed the 2022 CCAA home run throne the following inning, and it came in a big way. Emilio Barrera was hit by the pitch to start the inning off, Grant Decatrel drew a walk and Eric Smelko got on base thanks to an error, setting up for a monstrous grand slam by Ogrin to give the Toros a 4-2 lead.

The shortstop wasn't done. He led off the fifth inning with a shot to deep center field for his 23rd on the year to not only give the Toros a 5-2 lead, but to tie the record for home runs in a CCAA Tournament game.

It has been a long time since a CCAA player has hit as many home runs, going back to 2007, when UC San Diego's Matt Cantele hit 23. The conference record is 29 set by Scott Sharts in the now-NCAA Division I CSUN.

Humberto Chiquito was asked to pitch perhaps the biggest game in his playing career. And he delivered, going seven strong innings with five strikeouts and allowing seven hits and two walks.

The Toros put the game out of the Yotes' reach with a six-run ninth inning.
