CARSON -- Southpaw
Isaac Mullins was on his game to open today's twinbill against Cal State San Bernardino, tossing 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball en route to an 8-0 win over the visiting Yotes. In the nightcap, a 5-run 2nd inning capped by two huge hits pushed CSUDH to a 5-3 win, taking both contests and winning the series with one game left tomorrow.
With the sweep, the Toros moved into 2nd place in the CCAA, 1.5 games behind league-leader Chico State and 2 games ahead of 3rd place CS Monterey Bay.
In the opener,
Pierson Loska added insurance runs with a 3-run jack in the bottom of the 8th inning to put the game away, giving the Toros their second-straight win over CSUSB, and third in a row overall in which CSUDH has scored eight runs in each of its last three games.
Mullins improved to 4-0 on the year, fanning four Yotes and pitching a no-hitter until two outs in the 5th.
Offensively,
Scott Ogrin matched Loska's RBI production with three, while
Anthony Accordino paced the bats with a 3-for-4 performance.
Caleb Ellis and
Grant Decatrel added two hits each in the win.
In the nightcap, a scoreless tie was broken in the 2nd inning a a
Caleb Ellis double scored Matthew Mecate to open the scoring.
Eric Smelko then boomed a 2RBI double to right center with the bases loaded, crossing the plate himself one batter later after Ogrin smashed his 12 home run of the year to left center on a 3-0 count.
CSUSB mounted a late rally with three runs, but
Donovan Waitman came on in relief to toss the final two innings, picking up his second save of the year.
Ogrin finished with five RBI on the day, while game two starter
Nate Ortiz picking up his fourth win of the year after going 5.0 innings, fanning six against just one earned run against.
The two teams cap the series tomorrow with a 12 noon game at Toro Field.
