No. 4 Cougars Hand Toros First CCAA Tournament Berth Since 2013

CARSON -- Thanks to an error, No. 4 Cal State San Marcos' softball team punched Cal State Dominguez Hills into the postseason.

After a two-run, two-out single that tied the game, the first-place Cougars made a costly mistake in the eighth that led the Toros to a 4-3 game-one win and clinch a spot to the CCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. The Toros entered the weekend needing just a win to lock up a spot to the tournament. While the Toros (31-15, 19-11 CCAA) are in, they still need to keep their eyes out on the conference standings for seeding. After the Cougars took a 3-0 game-two win, Dominguez Hills drops a game behind idle Sonoma State in a neck-and-neck battle for third place.

The Toros will wrap up the home schedule Saturday at noon. Prior to first pitch, Dominguez Hills will honor its seniors and super seniors, former Toros from the 2020 season who missed out on a Senior Day due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Game 1 - CSUDH 4, CSUSM 3 (8 innings)
San Marcos (34-4, 23-3 CCAA) jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Going up against the front runner for CCAA Pitcher of the Year Savannah Coyle, the Toros collected a couple of hits against the lefty but came to no success in driving in runs until the fourth, when Maiya Lopez crushed a 3-run home run to right center to give the Toros a 3-1 lead.

Ashley Wies held the Cougars to just one run on two hits and a walk for five innings. Alyssa Olague took over and pitched a shutout sixth inning, but ran into trouble trying to close out the game. With two down and the tying run at second base, Olague lost a 1-1 count on a blooping double down the left field line to tie the game at three.

Olague retired the eighth and the Toros opened their half when Kaylee Hull was hit by the pitch. Angelina Alderette took over at first base and with Alex Davis at the plate, she hit to the direction of the shortstop who fielded the ball wrong and allowed Alderette to score the winning run and punch the ticket.

Game 2 - CSUSM 3, CSUDH 0
Olague got the ball to start the nightcap. Despite giving up a 3-run jack that eventually became the only scoring of the game, Olague threw zeroes the rest of the game, striking out eight and walking one.

Dominguez Hills left five runners on base, including a Claudia Valencia leadoff double in the fourth. On the other side, Jayline Sloss got the win allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out five.
