Isaac Mullins continued his to dominate from the bump as he tossed 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball while the Toro offense displayed a balanced attack at the plate en route to a 6-1 win over No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay to kick off this afternoon's twinbill on a warm and sunny day at Toro Field. Later in the day, the first-place Otters retaliated with a back-to-back home runs, one of which was a grand slam, to slug their way to a 9-4 game-two win over the Toros.
Freshman
Josh Castillo tossed the final 2.0 innings in relief.
The game one win did snaps a two-game skid, and avenge Thursday's setback in which CSUMB clawed back in its final at-bat to escape with the win.
The Toros got started early as Scott Orgrin continued his torrid hitting by hammering a 2-2 offering down the left field line for a solo shot to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
After the visitors answered with a run in the 2nd,
Matt Mecate gave the Toros the lead for good with an RBI single one inning later.
That's where the score remained until the 7th when
Eric Smelko went deep to lead off the frame, before
Alberto Luevano brought home two more runs four batters to make the score 5-1.
Luevano was at it again in the 8th, bringing home Ogrin with an RBI single to left to account for the final score.
Mullins fanned five batters against two walks to improve to 6-0 on the year while
Anthony Accordino, Luevano and
Caleb Ellis knocked two hits apiece, with Luevano adding three runs batting in on the day.
Dominguez Hills started the second game in slugging fashion, when Ogrin hit his second home run of the day to center field. The Otters answered back in the third with a solo homer of their own.
The Toros did retake the lead in the fourth, when
Caleb Ellis singled down the right field line to score in
Pierson Loska.
Nate Ortiz ran into trouble in the sixth inning which saw a grand slam crushed into the parking lot in right field followed by a solo shot to give the Otters a 6-2 lead.
The two sides wrap up the series Saturday at 11 a.m.
