TURLOCK – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team got the benefit of pitching miscues from Stanislaus State starter Casey Carr and scored five runs in the first inning, which proved to be more than plenty of enough for the Toros to rout the Warriors 10-2 and split the four-game CCAA series Sunday.
Dominguez Hills returns back to Southern California 10-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
While
Eric Smelko started the game off with a single through the left side, Carr would walk four straight batters to score in the game's first run and end his day. Damian Vallejos took over for Carr and was no bandage as he walked
Alberto Luevano to force in the second run. Although he got a strikeout for the first out, Vallejos hit
Caleb Ellis to force in the third run.
Matt Mecate delivered the first single with the bases loaded to score in
Pierson Loska and Smelko in his second turn of the inning, successfully bunted in a run for a single to give the Toros a 5-0 lead.
Lefty
Isaac Mullins came in with a five-run lead without having to throw a pitch. He surrendered a run in the first inning but Loska got the lead back in the second when he crushed a pitch to left center for a solo shot.
Anthony Accordino finished with a four RBI day. His first came in the first when he walked to force in a run. In the third inning he doubled and in the ninth he hit a two-run single.
Giovanni Besio and
Donovan Waitman both threw two innings of relief and combined for six strikeouts.
The Toros return home to play host to Cal State San Marcos starting Friday at 2 p.m.
