HAYWARD – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team – once again – had to settle with a split against fourth-place Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Softball Field Saturday.
Alyssa Olague led the way in the pitching circle by hurling the Toros to a 4-1 game one victory while the Pioneers, much like game one in Friday's bout, walked off 3-2 in eight innings to wrap up the series.
Game 1 – CSUDH 4, CSUEB 1
Despite giving up a first-inning run off a two-out double, Olague kept the Pioneers in check by throwing 1-2-3 outs in four of the six remaining innings. She struck out seven in her outing while only giving up six hits and one walk.
On the other side, the bats came to work in the second inning when
Kaylee Hull tied the game with a solo shot to right center. In the fourth inning, Hull drew a four-pitch walk and was subbed in for Jonesa Hebreo.
Katelyn Sturm would follow with a base hit and
Alex Davis brought both of them home with a two-run double to center field to give Dominguez Hills a 3-1 lead.
Kianna Abellera led off the fifth with a bunt single and
Claudia Valencia was hit by the pitch for the second time to setup the latter in scoring position. Racquel Jaime brought home Abellera with a RBI single to give the Toros a 4-1 lead.
Game 2 – CSUEB 3, CSUDH 2 (8 innings)
The afternoon cap of the doubleheader started out as a pitching duel between Dominguez Hills'
Ashley Wies and East Bay's Anamaria Beard.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that the ice would break. After Abellera drew a walk, Valencia slugged her home with a triple to left field.
Wies on two occasions had a chance to wrap up the game. The Pioneers would tie the game up in the seventh on an obstruction call with one out. In the eighth inning,
Maiya Lopez was hit by the pitch and then pinch-runner
Angelina Alderete made her way to third base to setup an RBI single by pinch-hitter
Dafne Bravo.
East Bay responded in its half of the eighth inning when Madeline Ramirez hit a two-run home run to walk off.
The Toros return home to face another ultimate test in Chico State, which entered the week No. 11 according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The Wildcats hit the road after losing 3-of-4 to first-place and No. 25 Cal State San Marcos in Chico over the weekend.
