CARSON – Baseball is a sport known to have so many unique moments.
Scott Ogrin is currently having one.
The senior infielder has not only recorded a hit in all four games with Cal State San Marcos this weekend, but he has slugged a home run in each of those games, including two Sunday which one of them sent the Toros on a 7-6 walkoff victory over the Cougars to complete the four-game CCAA series sweep.
In addition to the four home runs in the series, Ogrin has knocked in 15 runs with his bat.
It is also the first CCAA series sweep for the Toros since 2020 as they bump their overall record to 14-8 and 9-3 in conference play.
The Toros had to chase the Cougars early in the game. San Marcos scored first in the second inning and then the Toros followed in their half when
Caleb Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to score in
Anthony Accordino.
San Marcos reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning and then the Toros knotted it up again in the fifth, when Accordino grounded out but it worked to score in
Eric Smelko from third.
The sixth inning proved to be a big one for Dominguez Hills.
Emilio Barrera led off with a walk and back-to-back hit-by-pitches by
Matt Mecate and
Grant Decatrel to load the bases. Smelko hit a sacrifice foul out to bring home Barrera and then Ogrin took a pitch to left field for the fourth home run of the series and give the Toros a 6-3 lead.
The lead was not permanent, though. The Cougars scored one run in the seventh and then back-to-back solo home runs tied the game.
After
Carlos Bracamontes pitched through a two-out walk in the ninth, Ogrin stepped up and sent the Toros home with a walkoff home run.
Starter
Isaac Mullins threw 6.2 innings. Although he only struck out three, he didn't issue a walk and surrendered only three earned runs on 10 hits.
The Toros will get to sleep in their own beds for the next 'road trip,' which will be a four-game series with crosstown rivals Cal State LA. The two will first meet Friday at 6 p.m.
